Park Rules

The following is a summary of Major Park Rules for the Mara Conservancy – Mara Triangle – Transmara County Council. These rules are also applicable to Oloololo Game Ranch

  • Entry and exit to the park is only through Oloololo Gate or Mara South Bridge - unless staying at Little Governors. Therefore vehicles may not use the Kichwa airstrip area for entering or leaving the park.
  • When wet, the main road is closed between the 4km sign and the Sankuria junction near Oloololo Gate and will usually reopen the following day around 10 a.m. If entering from Oloololo Gate you will be informed and if approaching from the Serena, a road-closed sign will be posted at the 4km signpost.
  • Off-road driving is allowed but please return to the main track when finished viewing
  • Vehicles are not allowed into Tanzania and the Conservancy will not assist or take any responsibility if people are arrested. There is a track along the border from South Bridge to Ngiro-are and all area to the south of this road is in Tanzania.
  • During the migration, people are not allowed out of their vehicle or to stand on vehicles at crossing points. Further, excessive vehicle movement, parking and cutting across too close to the crossing area is not permitted.
  • No more than 5 vehicles permitted around leopard, lion, cheetah or rhino at any one time. Drivers should make room for any extra vehicles after they have spent about five minutes with the animals. Otherwise there is no time restriction as to how long you can stay.
  • Vehicles are required to maintain a minimum distance of 25 metres ( over 5 vehicle lengths ) away from animals particularly the Big Five.
  • Animals are not to be chased, followed too closely or harassed. Harassment includes getting too close causing them to fear and run - or forcing them into movement.
  • People are allowed out of vehicles at designated picnic sites, viewing points along the river and if with a professional guide, anywhere, provided no dangerous animals are in the vicinity. No one should be more than 25 metres from a vehicle. Drivers take full responsibility for their passengers.
  • No littering. This may seem obvious but it is always happening.
  • Oloololo Gate and South Bridge close at 6.30 p.m. open at 6.00 a.m. All vehicles must be back in their camp or lodge by 7.00 pm
  • There are vehicles dedicated to anti-harassment and monitoring. Please follow their advice or instruction.

Ignorance of the rules is no excuse.

The Mara Conservancy has the legal right, in the case of any deemed infringement to  :

a)  Issue a written warning

b)  Impose an on-the-spot fine of Ksh 10,000
